An artist shares her technique

The Los Padres Artist Guild holds a meeting every month, and the first get-together of the new year brings local artist Linda Blevins to demonstrate her craft: transferring a photograph to canvas. The meeting is open to the public, so anyone can view some fine art being created live!

The Los Padres Artist Guild presents Linda Blevins leading a demonstration, “Photos to Paintings, the Process of Translation,” as part of its monthly meeting on Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Luis Oasis Senior Center, 420 Soares Ave., Orcutt. Info: 934-5835 or lindablevins.com.

Do you know what keeps those California wildfires from burning their way to your doorstep? Literally the sweat, blood, and tears of your local firefighters. The Santa Maria Elks Club is holding a firefighter’s appreciation night that will include, besides a celebration of the sacrifices of these civil servants, one kind of fire we all like: barbecue.

The Elks Club presents a firefighters’ appreciation Night featuring a barbecue beef dinner on Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 1309 N. Bradley Road, Santa Maria. Cost is $12. Info: 922-1538.

Maybe your resolution this year should be to quit smoking. Thousands of people die each year from smoking-related health problems, and nobody wants to leave their family behind because they can’t break a habit. Smoking Cessation Classes are offered on Jan. 6, 8, 12, 14, 15, 20, 22, 26, and 29 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Santa Maria at 2801 Santa Maria Way, No. B; 425 W Central Ave., Lompoc; 2050 Viborg Road, Santa Ynez; 915 N. Milpas St., Santa Barbara; and at Cottage Hospital at Pueblos and Bath streets, Santa Barbara. Info: 346-7275 for Santa Maria and Lompoc.
